A UAE Corporate Tax return is the end of an evidence process, not a form that should be assembled from memory near the deadline. The taxable person must be able to connect registration details, accounting records, tax adjustments, elections, schedules and payment evidence to one controlled filing file.
This operational checklist is for founders and finance teams preparing a filing handover. It does not determine taxable income, the availability of any relief, free-zone status or the treatment of a specific transaction. Those conclusions should be confirmed against current Federal Tax Authority guidance and qualified tax advice.
In this guide, you will learn:
- how to set the filing calendar from the entity’s Tax Period;
- which records should support the return and its schedules;
- how to control review, submission and payment evidence; and
- what to preserve after filing.
Start with the registered taxable person and Tax Period
Confirm the legal entity, Corporate Tax registration number, trade licence, legal form, registered address and authorised user shown in EmaraTax. The return should belong to the same taxable person as the underlying accounting file. A group, branch, sole establishment or free-zone entity can raise additional questions, so do not carry assumptions from another company into the filing.
The FTA’s current general guide states that a Corporate Tax return and any tax payable are generally due within nine months from the end of the relevant Tax Period. Build the calendar from the period recorded for the taxable person rather than from a generic year-end. Preserve a screenshot or export showing the period and deadline used by the team.
| Control | Question | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Which legal person is filing? | Licence, incorporation record and CT registration |
| Period | What start and end dates appear in EmaraTax? | Portal record and approved accounting calendar |
| Authority | Who may prepare, approve and submit? | User access and authorisation record |
| Deadline | What is the filing and payment date for this period? | Dated compliance calendar |
Close the accounting file before calculating tax
Begin with a final trial balance and financial statements for the same entity and period. Reconcile the bank, receivables, payables, fixed assets, inventory, payroll, owner or related-party balances and material suspense accounts. Every later tax adjustment should point back to a stable accounting version.
- Lock the reporting period and name the approved trial-balance version.
- Reconcile opening balances to the prior period or formation records.
- Separate personal, shareholder and company transactions.
- Document material estimates, provisions and year-end journals.
- Flag related-party and connected-person items for technical review.
If the entity’s licence or actual operations have changed, resolve the corporate record before filing inconsistent facts. The Dubai business-activity guide covers that separate licensing workstream.
Build an adjustment and position register
The return is self-assessed. Create a schedule that starts with the accounting result and records each proposed adjustment, election, relief or special treatment. For every item, show the amount, source account, factual basis, legal or guidance reference, reviewer and final decision. Unresolved items should remain visibly open rather than disappearing into a net total.
Free-zone status deserves a separate file. A free-zone licence does not by itself prove that income receives a particular Corporate Tax treatment. Use the qualifying free-zone questions to organise the evidence, then obtain transaction-specific advice where required.
| Schedule | Minimum control | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting-to-tax bridge | Each adjustment traces to a ledger account and source document | Classification or deductibility is uncertain |
| Related parties | Counterparty, relationship, transaction and support are recorded | Terms or value need technical analysis |
| Reliefs and elections | Eligibility facts and approval are preserved | Conditions are incomplete or changing |
| Free-zone analysis | Entity, activity, customer and income evidence are separated | A qualifying conclusion is being assumed |
Prepare the EmaraTax return as a controlled data set
The FTA’s Corporate Tax Returns guide describes a return with entity information, elections and schedules that vary according to the taxable person’s answers. Do not copy a fixed field list from another filer. Open the current return, map each field to a working-paper reference and record who supplied and reviewed the answer.
- Compare pre-populated entity data with the current licence and registration.
- Reconcile return totals to the approved accounting-to-tax bridge.
- Review every yes/no answer because it may open or suppress a schedule.
- Keep supporting calculations in a consistent currency and rounding policy.
- Export or capture the final return before authorisation and submission.
Separate preparation, approval, submission and payment
Use four explicit gates. The preparer confirms that the working papers are complete. A reviewer challenges the material positions and reconciliations. The authorised person approves the final return. The portal user submits only the approved version and saves the acknowledgement. If tax is payable, retain the payment instruction, transaction reference and bank evidence separately from the return receipt.
| Gate | Completion evidence | Do not rely on |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare | Indexed working papers and reconciliations | An undocumented spreadsheet total |
| Review | Closed review points and approved positions | A verbal confirmation |
| Submit | Final return copy and EmaraTax acknowledgement | A screenshot of an unfinished page |
| Pay | FTA reference and cleared bank evidence | Creating a payment instruction alone |
Preserve a seven-year audit file
Current FTA guidance states that records supporting the Corporate Tax return should generally be kept for seven years after the end of the relevant Tax Period. The file may include accounting records, transaction evidence, asset and liability records, stock records, bank statements, financing documents, ledgers, invoices, orders and delivery documents. Electronic records can be useful, but they should remain legible, complete and retrievable.
Preserve the filed return, acknowledgement, payment evidence, correspondence, working papers, source documents and the identity of the people who prepared and approved the filing. If an amendment, clarification or FTA request occurs later, start from that controlled file rather than reconstructing the period from email.
Frequently asked questions
Is every UAE Corporate Tax return due nine months after the period end?
The FTA’s current general guidance gives a nine-month filing and payment rule. Confirm the taxable person’s actual Tax Period, portal deadline and any current exception before relying on the calendar.
Can an accountant submit the return?
The return may be prepared or submitted through an authorised route, but the taxable person should maintain authority records, review the final version and retain the complete evidence file.
Does filing prove that the tax treatment is correct?
No. Corporate Tax is self-assessed. Submission records what was filed; it does not replace the evidence and technical analysis supporting each material position.
Need to align the company record before a tax handover?
DRI can help organise the Dubai company, licence, ownership and banking workstreams. Corporate Tax calculations, positions, returns and payments should be confirmed with the FTA and a qualified tax adviser.
